The test is computer-based and has three content sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Analytical Writing

In addition to these three sections there will be one unidentified and unscored section. The unscored section is used to test questions and content for future versions of the GRE.

The test includes six sections and will take up to three hours to complete:

  • Section 1: Analytical Writing – Issue Task – 45 minutes
  • Section 2: Analytical Writing – Argument Task – 30 minutes
  • Section 3: Verbal Reasoning – 30 Multiple Choice Questions – 30 minutes
  • Section 4: Quantitative Reasoning – 28 Multiple Choice Questions – 45 minutes
  • Sections 5 and 6: Unscored and Research Sections – Various times

Two of the six sections will be unidentified and unscored as indicated above. However, you must complete the sections, although the score you receive on those sections will not impact your overall test grade. The sections are used to test new questions for future versions of the GRE.
