Format

The test has three sections:

  • Critical Reading
  • Mathematics
  • Writing


Each section contains several types of challenges :

  • Writing an Essay
  • Multiple Choice Questions
  • Written Responses to Questions

 

The test is formatted into ten total testing sections:

  • Section 1: 25 - minutes, Essay
  • Sections 2-7 - 25-minutes, Questions
  • Sections 8-9 - 30-minutes, Questions
  • Section 10 - 10-minutes, Multiple Choice Writing

On each test given at a test site, sections 2-9 will be in a different order for each student. So don’t peek at your neighbors test! One section of the 10 sections will be an unscored section. You are required to complete the section, but the score you receive on that section will not impact your overall test grade. The section is used to test new questions for future versions of the SAT.
